4-Year Old's To-Do List
No, this isn't a to-do list that's four years old (although, I do have some things on my mental to-do list that have probably been there for four years!). This was a to-do list dictated by a four-year old, yesterday. The items are not listed in order of importance; they are listed in the order to which they came to his mind. It's fun to see/hear how their minds are at work.
Firstborn Comments
"Mama? Why do you have to cut my nails?"
"Because they keep growing, and getting long, and getting dirt underneath them. If they never, ever grew, I would never have to cut them."
"Well, after this I'm going to pray that God would make my nails to stop growing."
Click, click, click go the nail cutters.
"You know what, Mama? Now I can't pick my nose."
"Good!"

Special Flowers

What? Dandelions and dirt? Yes, dandelions and dirt. These are special flowers delivered with love to Mama from two special children. They were hand picked with the greatest of care, and then personal attention was given to selecting just the right container from the sandbox. The day was a bit windy. so they both had the idea of adding dirt to hold down their containers. (One choose to put the dirt in the bottom of the cup, under the flowers, and the other thought the dirt would be best on top- a matter of convenience.) So, these were very special flowers, given from the heart. :-)
Laundry on the Line
Okay- so there are a few benefits to moving away from all of your good friends to a metropolis where you sometimes feel more isolated than you did on an island w/ 8,000 in town: drying and airing laundry on the line in the sun! It is a bit more dry and sunny here in Colorado than it is in Ketchikan, so crisp sheets fresh off the line were a special treat last night (yes- even laundry can be special if viewed from the right point of view!).

More Chronicles of a Middle Child
Plan: Use Potty Independently
Information: Sit on potty for lengthy period of time (regularly informing Mama that I'm not yet done). Hmmm... toilet paper! Explore cause-effect of pulling large portions of toilet paper off from roll next to toilet. Oops- too much. Explore available opportunities for disposing of evidence (Mama dislikes finding large amounts of TP rolled off). Possible options include the trash, the toilet, and hmmm, my mouth? Hmmm, chews well, minimal flavor...
Evaluation: Mama still thinks unrolling large portions of toilet paper off from roll is wasteful. Verbal chastisement received for amount in toilet paper in toilet bowl. Gob in mouth discovered and spit out per Mama's instructions. Further verbal chastisement received. May avoid this scenario in near future; distant future remains to be seen once selective editing occurs within memory bank. Bathroom breaks shortened with more frequent supervision by Mama.

The Chronicles of a Middle Child
Plan: Delay Nap
Information: Lay down in bed as instructed while Mama works on her Bible study in nearby rocker. Fidget, toss and turn restlessly, play with stuffed animal and blanket (a large blanket draped over my feet and head make a great tent). Instructed by mama to put feet down and not play with blanket any more. Notified that I will lose dolly and stuffed animal if I continue to play with them.
Evaluation: Disregarded Mama's instructions regarding blanket usage; lost blanket privileges.
Plan: Second attempt to delay (or get out of) nap; will utilize different tactics.
Information: Apply four fingers to back of throat to elicit gag reflex, followed by emesis of partially digested lunch onto pillow case.
Evaluation: Pillow removed, received verbal rebuke.
Plan: Attempt delay of nap again (getting out of it appears rather hopeless).
Information: Fuss over small spot of emesis that remains on sheet. Informed by Mama that if I'm going to gag myself and throw up on the pillow, I may have to deal with a small spot of yuckiness on the sheet, and that I should put my head down somewhere else.
Evaluation: Foiled again! Zzzzzzzz.....
