And God sent snow...

Snow?  Can it be?  An actual snow- for the THIRD time since the onset of Fall (the first snow since the start of Winter)?  WOW!  The kids were ecstatic when they woke up yesterday and saw the snow.  We had an opportunity to enjoy it with some cousins.

Last night, while David did some shoveling after work, Silas and Amelie enjoyed the snow some more.  Poor, little Josiah stood at the window and watched with envy.  He didn't realized how much warmer he was in the house!

It's such a nice change of pace!  If I could have it my way, it would keep snowing off and on for several days.  :-)

Time for New Sheets When...

You know you're going to need new sheets in the future when:
-You notice the fitted sheet has developed several small holes (either it's wear-and-tear or it's time to tell your husband that he needs to trim his toenails).
-You have to zig-zag stitch the seams on the pillow cases- the material is rotting and has torn apart.

The clincher is when:
-The pillow cases tear again- you know you're going to have to reinforce with additional fabric and another line of zig-zag stitches.
-The flat sheet tears at the top hem when you're pulling it up while making the bed.

Are these sheets even safe to sleep on???

Long-term goal: Await another 30% coupon from Kohls and hope for a good sale that coincides with the coupon dates.  800-count would be nice.

Short-term goal: The sheets have five years of solid use on them- what's another month or two with some flannel fabric for reinforcement and more zig-zag stitching?  Hmmm, might get six months more of use with this method!!!

Feet and Distraction (or distraction-proofing)

The other night David was reading to the kids.  Amelie has this thing with using her feet for purposes of distraction and destruction (i.e.- brother's building with Legos- sister just happens to reach over with her legs and stick her feet right in the middle of what he's been working so hard on for the past 20 minutes, and maybe shuffles through the Lego pile to really get a response).  He gave Amelie instructions about NOT distracting with her feet while he was reading to the two of them.

Silas: I know how we could keep her from being a distraction!

Daddy: How's that?

Silas [eagerly]: Well, we'll just build a wall around her, and another wall and another wall...

Daddy (chuckling)

Silas [totally undeterred]: ...and then we'll put a roof over the top of her, and when we want to have her out we'll just take the roof off and let her out!

What a brilliant idea!  Why didn't we think of that before? A set of walls with a lid for each of the kids... maybe large boxes.

Hmmm...   Probably would be best to continue with Biblical training, instead.

Mommy Birthdays...

5-year old [informatively]: Mom, there's something that I'm just not going to tell you about.

Mommy: Okay.

5-year old [with seriousness]: And don't come downstairs, because there's something that we're working on.

Mommy [matched solemness, hidden smile]: Okay, I'll remember that!

Food is Beautiful

God made real food beautiful... especially pomegranates!  I think the color and appearance of the inside flesh of a pomegranate is my favorite out of all fruits and vegetables; the deep scarlet color shines and has a glossy depth to it.

-For easy preparation, cut the top 1/4-inch off, slit each side about a 1/4-inch deep where you see the white part forming sections.
-Soak the whole thing in a bowl of cold water for about 10 minutes and then pull it apart, gently working the small pieces out into the water with your fingers.  (Keep the whole thing submerged while your work at this.)
-When you've removed all of the pieces from the white part, strain the water out and enjoy the fruits of your labor!

These are sweet and tart with a nice crunch.  The perfect Fall fruit!

Toddlers and Plastic Wrap

The two items are not typically a recommended combination.
This combo, however, was discovered shortly after the raiding of the kitchen drawer occurred.  Intervention (i.e. confiscation) occurred shortly thereafter.  This must have been like a dream come true, though.  It seems to me that pulling and yanking the plastic wrap off from its roll in unhindered amounts would be similar having the opportunity to grab the toilet paper and trail it all through the house while still attached to the wall next to the toilet (this has happened to various extents with each child), yank all of the wipes out of the wipe container one at a time (a favorite activity of the pictured child), squeeze all of the toothpaste out of the tube at once (has not happened... YET), or
taking part in any other type of activity involving a roll or amount of material neatly confined to its packaging!

As a side note, in our family, this stuff (plastic wrap) has worked notably well in pranks- particularly when one has a rather large roll of the stuff to wrap around another person's vehicle.  That's a whole another story, for another time and another place!

Notable Conversations

Recently, Silas spent a day with Daddy "on-the-job." Their errands took them to Lowes (an all-purpose home and lumber store). While checking out, the sales clerk struck up a conversation with Silas.

Clerk: "So, what are you going to be for Halloween?"

Silas: "We don't celebrate Halloween. It's Satan's holiday."

Clerk: "Well, we didn't celebrate Halloween as kids, either. It's okay to be different. Do you celebrate Christmas?"

Silas: "Yeah, that's when we celebrate Jesus."

David's thought on this is: If only we had more child evangelists! Or rather, if only we had the honesty of children.

Recent quote...

The kids are encouraged to share compliments with each other to help combat unkind words.
Sometimes they get it, and sometimes, well...

Silas: "Amelie, you're as pretty as I am."

or biblical complaints...

Silas: "Daddy- Amelie smote me!"

Another day in the life of a mom- from June 3

So, a breastfed baby can go several days without dirtying his diaper.
By day two or three, though, it's best for those around him to be very wary of where he is and what he is doing.
Why? See below!

The crime scene: the closet in the kids' bedroom.

The victim: the unsuspecting mommy who picked her little darling up for an... eew!

The evidence: they say a picture is worth a thousand words. Enough said.

The culprit: this "innocent" little cutie.

From Josiah's Birthday

I have this unexplainable need to catch up, thus, the pictures from Josiah's birthday back in June! The edited photos are compliments of a smart uncle.

A day in the life of a mom... from June 1

Okay- this one is coming off the press a few months late, however, I was organizing/reviewing photos last night, and came across these gems. I took these to commemorate a particularly, um, interesting day that the kids and I had the privilege to experience together. To start off, the four-year old was very interested in seeing how his project from Sunday School was doing. He is holding the project- the bottom quarter of a 2-liter soda bottle with soil and grass seed. He drew a face for the front of the thing, and the goal was to grow the grass "hair" and be able to cut it. Well, in his enthusiasm, he dropped it on the floor (remember, the soil in this thing is wet from being watered recently) and I found the dear little guy trying to clean up the mess with a tissue. (That means he was basically rubbing the soil into the light colored carpet!)
The three-year old got up, and was, literally, a bloody mess. She had managed to have a nosebleed in the early hours of the morning, resulting in blood spots all over her bed, blanket, pillow, PJs, and face. She got washed, everything else got a bit of hydrogen peroxide, Biz (my favorite weapon of the laundry room), and a good washing!
In the meantime, the poor little almost-1-year old is stuck in his exersaucer, crying in sympathy for his mommy. Okay- that's a bit of an exaggeration- he was crying because he was hungry, and mommy had plopped him there so she could race around to start damage control on the other household incidents!
A little later, after sanity had been restored, we enjoyed some time in the great outdoors. Our children have a natural affinity to dirt, and of course, that means someone had to try and bring in a container full of the stuff! Mommy's instructions were to leave the dirt outside. She, however, didn't specify WHERE the dirt needed to go. Logically, of course, the brain of a preschooler says to just dump it wherever- as long as it's outside. In the future, Mommy will specify and supervise the dumping of dirt!
Finally, as the clean laundry was drying on the line (bye-bye blood spots), someone (some two) thought it would be fun to go tearing through the sheets. Unfortunately, my clothespins are not engineered to withstand such forces, and well, you can see the results for yourself! Thankfully, we had lunch, nap, and David then came home and took everyone ( to the library for a little while!

The house smells like bacon...

...but it's worth it! We had a little Cape Fox-style treat for dinner, tonight. Mmmmm...

Splash Park in Loveland, Sept 5

Here's what you do if you get home on a Sunday evening, it's plenty warm outside and you don't really feel like being in the house just yet: You find that splash park that's just 15 minutes away (plus, you've been meaning to find it all summer). Top that off with this being the last weekend it will be open until Spring 2011- s0 better now or never!

This splash area is at the Loveland Sports Park off from Hwy 34 just west of Centerra. You push a button on the ground below the windmill sculpture, and the thing starts raining on you. The splash area cycles through about 8-10 minutes worth of various spray and splashing devices before turning off.

We are not descendants of monkeys, but...
...we get to have just as much fun!
This cute, little monkey doesn't swing quite like the others.
This one, however, is well on his way!
(He also climbs.)

Camping September 3-4

Okay, okay- so the post is a little, ummm, late? But hey, we all know that (in the realm of blogs), late is better than never. We decided to be adventurous and took the kids camping on Storm Mountain, west of Loveland, up the Big Thompson Canyon a ways. This required a fair amount of preparation (particularly since we had not been camping as a family before), a fair amount of borrowing (a larger tent was a good idea, as well as a few handy doo-dads for around the campsite). Here is everyone enjoying the evening campfire, and you can see those good ol' Colorado lodgepole pines in the background. (This was a week or two before the state-wide fire ban; we canceled any further camping trips, as the fire in the evening just makes the experience!)

A snapshot of what camping is really all about- s'mores!
Here's Silas tasting his first s'more. You can tell how much he hates it.

Another one of the horrors of camping- hot chocolate before breakfast!

Here are Silas and Amelie making their contribution to the campfire. (Everyone did arrive home fully intact.) They also contributed in other ways. Two shovels make the digging of potty holes all the more quick, right? The only problem is that holes dug 5-6 feet away from the campfire are deemed by the parental authorities as unusable and inappropriate!

David earned a Merit Badge (j/k!) on this trip. Check out the pot hanging over the fire. Apparently he had to do a little searching for the perfect piece of wood to act as a hook at the end of the string.

This is the littlest camper, worn out after a night of telling his mommy how much he disliked sharing a sleeping bag with her! He spent probably 40% of the night fussing/crying, 40% nursing (tired mommy equals a mommy willing to allow free nursing privileges for the benefit of 15-minutes of uninterrupted sleep), and 20% actually sleeping without complaint. The morning found a tired mommy and baby pair! Thankfully, the mommy found the mountain air to be somewhat invigorating (it was either that or the hot chocolate before breakfast- maybe a combo) and had decent energy the next day.

Four-wheeling in the Jeep. This was the kids' first experience four-wheeling. On Friday they requested that David stop driving in the ditch. It was just too bumpy for them! By Saturday, they were a little more used to it, and Silas told us that he wished we could always be just in God's creation. (I think, though, that was a reference to his enjoyment of the natural environment, not the "natural" road!)

Here is the view off from Storm Mountain. Long's Peak (one of Colorado's more famous Fourteeners, located in Rocky Mountain National Park) is in the far range on the right side of the picture.

Colorado's quaking aspen trees.

Driving back down to the flat lands through the Big Thompson Canyon. Back home we went to de-smoke ourselves (there's something about a campfire that no matter where you move, the smoke seems to follow!), and clean up. The whole trip took a fair amount of work, but was definitely very enjoyable! There's something so nice and relaxing about getting away from it all.

Top Reasons Why NOT to Put Your Three- and Four-Year Olds to Bed with Glow Sticks

1.) They might somehow break them (if a little bending and twisting gets the stick glowing brightly- just think what a whole lot of bending and twisting can do!) and get the contents on themselves and their bedding.
Status: Actual
Intervention: Glow stick removed from bedroom immediately; negligible mess quickly cleaned by fast-acting father.
Result: Resulted in glowing fingers and pajamas. Three-year old changed into fresh pajamas; glowing spots removed from hands with wet wash cloth. Issue resolved without further mishap.

2.) They might chew on the stick, risking breakage and oral exposure to glow-stick contents (which are composed of who knows what!).
Status: Actual
Intervention: Glow stick removed from bedroom; accidental exposure to oral mucosa of four-year old prevented.
Result: Potentially could have resulted in a smile brighter than a toothpaste commercial! Issue resolved prior to such occurrence.

Silas' New Bed

David's working on the coolest bed ever for Silas. It will be a toddler-sized version of our big bed. These two photos of the headboard and footboard are just the "dry run"- he still has to glue and stain everything, and make/attach the side rails. Want one like it for your cute little one? $100 will do the trick!

The Many Faces of Josiah
